Metal-organic cluster-based molecular catalysts design and their assembly mechanistic Research group: Patzke Group Group leader: Prof. Dr. Greta R. Patzke Location: Zurich, Switzerland https://www.uzh.ch/de.html https://patzke.ch The University of Zürich is Switzerland’s largest public research university located in the city of Zürich. We can support a CSC scholarship position in the Patzke group at the Department of Chemistry (DoC). Prof. Greta R. Patzke's research group covers a wide range of preparative and analytical techniques for the characterization and targeted design of functional molecular and heterogeneous materials. Two threads connect them: First, they all serve to address current environmental and health challenges. Second, we mainly focus on low-cost 3d transition metals when designing active centers of our materials. The main focus of our energy materials research is water splitting (artificial photosynthesis). Our goal is to bridge the fields of molecular and solid-state catalysis - through identifying and understanding overarching design principles and mechanistic pathways. We complement this by exploring the formation mechanisms of molecules and solids as an essential part of their controlled design. Research projects: 1. Surface-enhanced Raman detection of ligand substrates on the {Co₄O₄} cubane. 2. In situ Raman spectroscopy of {Co₄O₄} cubane nucleation process: the relationship between nucleation and polymorph selection. 3. {Co₄O₄} cubane based molecular catalysts synthesis and their application on sustainable energy. 4. Development and characterization of transition metal-based electrocatalysts for water splitting and urea oxidation. Required background of the student: Coordination chemistry, electrochemistry, structural chemistry, electro-/photocatalysis,spectroscopy/analytical chemistry.
