PhD in Future Advanced RF Transceiver Integrated Circuits Summary: Research and design of RF systems and circuits continues to be a field where practitioners are in high demand and are setting the international direction of future communication technologies, such as enhancing 5G and formulating key aspects in 6G. In particular, the field of Millimetre Wave (mmWave) circuit design has experienced a resurgence of interest, due to usage in 5G and anticipated increased use in future 6G mobile and fixed systems. Systems operating at circa 28GHz, 73GHz, and sub-THz are all becoming vitally important. Equally, new use of the FR3 6G band (7 – 14 GHz and possibly to 24 GHz) is re-energising microwave RF design activity. Underpinning future communications equipment will be cost-effective and low-power (yet high-performance) RF circuits and hardware, spanning the entire field and spectrum of RF design. Commonly, these designs are all realised on-chip. The purpose of this research project is to investigate present state-of-the-art aspects of mmWave and Microwave RF circuit design and then choose an area for further research that is interesting to the candidate and complements the Group’s activity. It is expected that the focus of the work will be on SiGe BiCMOS or GaAs MMIC design, with many new skills to be acquired. Project Description: The research topic will be chosen from one or more of (but not limited to) the following themes, as relevant to the Group' s ongoing research activity: • Low power RF modulators/demodulators • Fundamental and Subharmonic mixers • RF Sampling transceiver architectures • Wideband modulators/demodulators • PCB & RFIC & MMIC implementation of low-power, high-performance transceivers and subsystems • High-performance tunable and reconfigurable oscillators and frequency synthesizers • Application of AI / Machine Learning to physical layer circuitry, signals, and waveforms Researchers can expect to become involved in designing novel hardware and related DSP or control software for their proposed system(s) and then trialling and enhancing them for peak operational performance in the Lab or field. The project will be part of an ongoing activity in 6G next-generation mmWave systems, also involving a wide range of industry partners. The EM, Wireless Hardware & RF Devices Research Group is working on multiple areas of RF communications technology, including mmWave, sub-THz communications, propagation measurement,t and IoT systems. The technology emerging from the PhD project will contribute to these research themes. Academic Requirements: Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Bachelor's/Master's Honours degree in Electronic Engineering, Physics or a closely related discipline. The student should have skills in (or would keenly like to develop skills in) electronics design related to RF engineering and SDR.
