What we expect 1. Students interested in a PhD degree in computer science and/or AI. 2. People with a PhD degree looking for a postdoc position in computer science and/or AI 3. Strong interests and curiosity in understanding the foundation/nature of computer science, mathematics and other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. 4. Hardworking. 5. Decent understanding of concepts of your major. What we do here 1. Thanks to the foundation of AI and computer science, we discovered a theory on how to integrate the teaching and learning of STEM subjects (including Computer Science and AI), a very difficult problem in the education research areas. This theory is expected to fundamentally change how STEM subjects are learned in elementary, secondary schools and college. It also allows the use of Large Language Models (LLM) such as ChatGPT in teaching and learning. 2. We design/develop novel intelligent systems to assist students' learning. 3. We design/develop new programming languages and supporting tools. 4. Design/develop teaching/learning materials for STEM subjects for elementary/secondary/college students. 5. Study and understand how students learn. What skills you will learn and practice 1. Theory. Foundation of computer science, AI, Math, Physics, … 2. Programming language design and implementation. 3. Large language models such as ChatGPT … 4. Web based system development (offering intelligent support of student learning) 5. Work with large teams (more than 20+ people) … Salary 1. For PhD students, we will pay your tuition and you get a salary of USD29K/year. 2. For postdocs, salary will compensate for your experience. Our values 1. We target hard research problems that have a great value to our society. 2. We focus on simple and elegant solutions. 3. Nothing is more practical than a good theory. 4. We publish in journals and conferences recognized by mainstream researchers. The lab 1. We are in a high growth stage. By summer 2025, we expect to have 7 to 10 PhD students, 1 or more post-docs and several visiting researchers with strong expertise complement ours, and 20+ Master students. 2. The lab is mainly funded by federal agencies such as National Science Foundation and Department of Education. 3. Texas Tech has a beautiful campus with 40K+ students. 2. People of Lubbock are very friendly. Remember what Yao Ming (姚明)said: once a Texan, always a Texan : ) 3. Lubbock, with a population of about 260K, has the right size, not too small and not too big : ) Traffic is always good and there are numerous restaurants including Chinese ones and Texas BBQ : ) and numerous grocery stores including Costco, Walmart, HEB and Asian/Chinese ones. 4. Low cost life (e.g., rate for one room from $425 to $900). 5. Direct flights to Las Vegas (full of fun : ), Denver (beautiful rocky mountains national park), Dallas (2nd largest hub with flights to everywhere), Houston (another hub), Austin, and Phoenix. 6. Ski place and beautiful canyon parks with a driving distance of 1 hour or more. 7. The Texas economy grew faster than the nation as a whole for the fifth quarter in a row, growing at a rate of 7.7% during the third quarter of 2023. 8. The Texas economy is 2nd largest in the USA, and the 8th largest economy in the world, valued at more than $2.4 trillion.
