2 PostDoc positions in Civil / Geotechnical / Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science at UCC National Challenge Fund - Science Foundation Ireland Project title: ‘Road Phone’ - Road pavement condition monitoring using smartphone sensing at the community level Supervision team: Dr. Zili Li (UCC Civil Engineering), Dr. Andrea Visentin (UCC Computer Science) Mr. James Loney (Pavement Technology, MACEL) Project description: Globally, thousands of kilometers of road pavement inevitably deteriorate with time and require regular survey. Conventionally, road surveying relies on designated vehicles equipped with specialised sensors dedicatedly running the whole road network on a multiannual basis. In the light of road maintenance and transportation sustainability, this project will develop a novel low-cost sensing technology for semi-live road pavement monitoring using smartphones installed in vehicles. Technically, road surface defects may cause vehicle ‘bumping’. The induced-vibration can then be captured by accelerometer and gyroscope sensors embedded in smartphones together with GPS location coordinates. The smartphone data gathered will be analysed using cutting-edge machine learning algorithms to detect road pavement defects at the community level. The RoadPhone team consists of three core members (Dr. Zili Li from Civil / Geotechnical Engineering, Dr. Andrea Visentin from Data Analytics and Mr. James Loney, Technical Director from Pavement Industry), two Postdocs (one from Civil / Geotechnical / Mechanical Engineering and the other from Computer Science), stakeholders from UCC Park & Ride shuttle buses, road asset owners. Position Description: 2 full-time Postdoc positions start from 01 March 2023 or very soon thereafter. Candidate Experience: The candidate should have a PhD degree in Civil / Geotechnical / Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science. Experience in vibration, road pavement engineering, data analytics, big data processing, machine learning would be an advantage.
