SCI論文投稿趣事二則 一則 我們團(tuán)隊(duì)一直從事計(jì)算生物化學(xué)領(lǐng)域的科研工作，依靠專業(yè)軟件構(gòu)建生物分子模型探索生化現(xiàn)象背后的規(guī)律。并且始終堅(jiān)持著自己的研究特色：從進(jìn)化的角度研究酶催化功能，探究酶家族成員之間的進(jìn)化關(guān)系。說白了就是注重事物的普遍聯(lián)系性，而不局限于事物的個(gè)性。 大約三年前我們完成了一篇關(guān)于脫鹵素酶家族的研究工作，題為：“Insights into the functional divergence of the haloacid dehalogenase superfamily from phosphomonoesterase to inorganic pyrophosphatase”，文章于2020年10月8日投稿期刊Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics。2020年10月31日收到第一輪審稿意見，有三位審稿人，其中第二位審稿人質(zhì)疑我們計(jì)算模型的尺寸太小，其他兩位意見相對(duì)溫和。由于我們的研究工作自成一派，經(jīng)�？吹綄徃迦讼热霝橹鞯膶⑽覀兊难芯績�(nèi)容和方法歸類為傳統(tǒng)研究，提出類似的質(zhì)疑，所以一開始我們只是按照以往的經(jīng)驗(yàn)做答。 2021年1月25日第二次審稿意見返回：兩位審稿人通過，但是第二位審稿人對(duì)我們的回復(fù)很不滿意。具體體現(xiàn)在兩方面：一是堅(jiān)持認(rèn)為我們計(jì)算模型的尺寸太小，建議我們擴(kuò)大模型；二是認(rèn)為我們?cè)诨匦胖修q解過多，實(shí)質(zhì)改動(dòng)太少，連帶著提出來了一些新的質(zhì)疑。如他所言：“In most cases, the explanation in the response letter was much longer and more in depth than the changes made in the manuscript. While I don't fully understand some explanations in the response letter, the limited changes in the manuscript are not sufficient to clarify my original or new questions.”言語中，嚴(yán)厲的態(tài)度以及一系列苛責(zé)的修改意見，可以看出審稿人真的生氣了。反復(fù)的研讀了審稿意見后，我們認(rèn)為根本原因還是在于審稿人沒有理解這篇文章的主旨。 所謂“多則惑，少則得”，這次我們轉(zhuǎn)變了回復(fù)思路，力求抓住重點(diǎn)以免陷入審稿人的情緒中。于是在回信的開篇就將《孫子兵法》的一句名言“上兵伐謀 其次伐交 其次伐兵”翻譯給他，此處省略了“其下攻城”是因?yàn)樵~不達(dá)意：“In The Art of War, it is said that the highest form of generalship is to use the thought and stratagem, the second best is to use the diplomacy and cooperation, and the third is to use the force and arms.” 緊跟其后，我們將這一認(rèn)識(shí)引伸到科學(xué)研究上：“So is the case in the scientific research: the problems of the method selection and model design lie in the cognition (thought) of the scientific problem (the method and model are our force and arms).”繼而提出：“To abstract the scientific problem from the research background and describe it with clear wording is a good beginning for the authors.”通過這么幾句話在回信中開篇明義，委婉的引 導(dǎo)審稿人深入了解在文章中我們所要解決的科學(xué)問題，從而避免其先入為主的誤解。 自然而然的順著這個(gè)思路，我們用常規(guī)的科學(xué)語言解釋了文章的主旨。闡明模型的設(shè)計(jì)完全是針對(duì)于特定的科學(xué)問題，由于和傳統(tǒng)研究目的不同，自然模型設(shè)計(jì)也會(huì)隨之有些不同。對(duì)于其他附帶問題，我們盡量以簡潔的措辭予以回復(fù)，以免喧賓奪主。盡管我們之前有多次和審稿人辯論的經(jīng)驗(yàn)，但大多都采取科學(xué)論文常規(guī)的討論方式，這還是第一次用東方哲學(xué)智慧去主導(dǎo)科學(xué)辯論，回信于2021年3月26日投出后多少有些忐忑不安。 2021年4月16日，收到了第三輪審稿意見，欣喜的發(fā)現(xiàn)審稿人的轉(zhuǎn)變。首先審稿人明確表明認(rèn)可了我們的解釋方式：“In their response to the second review, the authors explained the model in a way that I can understand.”同時(shí)，審稿人提到“I understand the paper pretty well after 3 reads”表明我們之前的判斷是正確的，審稿人一開始并沒有理解我們的文章主旨。另外，值得一提的是審稿人一改之前的苛責(zé)，不但為我們做了一些英語語法上的修改，而且言辭中表現(xiàn)出充分的尊重：“The authors would be welcome to use any of the paragraph above, if they find it useful.”文章最終在簡單的修改后，于2021年4月底接收并順利發(fā)表。 二則 延續(xù)前一篇工作，我們繼續(xù)完成了關(guān)于脫鹵素酶家族的系列研究工作，題為：“The His23 and Lys79 pair determines the high catalytic efficiency of the inorganic pyrophosphatase of the haloacid dehalogenase superfamily”，文章于2021年9月25日投稿期刊BBA-General Subjects。 2021年10月30日收到第一輪審稿意見。共有兩位審稿人，第一位審稿人明確質(zhì)疑了我們計(jì)算方法的選擇，建議我們選擇另外一種計(jì)算方法；第二位審稿人基本滿意我們的工作，提了一些小的修改建議。我們照舊做答。 2021年12月30日第二次審稿意見返回。第二位審稿人通過，第一位審稿人依然糾纏于計(jì)算方法的選擇。他對(duì)我們具體要解決的科學(xué)問題閉口不談，而是泛泛而談的說我們采用的計(jì)算方法的缺點(diǎn)，言語中帶有明顯的個(gè)人傾向。這次我們并沒有急于回應(yīng)，而是擱置了一段時(shí)間讓事情先冷卻下來。大約兩個(gè)月后，我們重新拾起問題，認(rèn)為繼續(xù)回應(yīng)審稿人只會(huì)陷入無休的爭執(zhí)，于是決定不再回復(fù)審稿意見，而是直接將想法陳述給編輯。 在給編輯的回信中，我們首先說明自己是保守派的科研工作者：“We are the old-school scientists. We observe and think about the biology object, abstract the ideas into scientific language and problem, then design the experiment and models to the scientific problem.”繼而表明技術(shù)流是目前的主流：“In recent decades, technology application dominates the science research. In such background, emphasis on technology and methods is more popular and the new-school style.”潛臺(tái)詞就是我們不是平庸隨大流的“nobody”，而是有自己獨(dú)立思想的科研工作者。 接著，我們從專業(yè)的角度闡述目前科學(xué)研究所面臨的挑戰(zhàn)：“In the post-genomic era, the life science on the complex and massive bio-information demands systematic cognition and method.”繼而提出目前常規(guī)的技術(shù)方法在面對(duì)復(fù)雜生物系統(tǒng)和大數(shù)據(jù)問題時(shí)的局限性：“When we extremely pursue the details of the biology object by these modeling methods, we are going away from the complexity and dynamics of the biology object.”這恐怕就是秀一秀所謂的科研格局吧。 最后，我們明確指出拒絕接受審稿人帶有明顯個(gè)人傾向的技術(shù)推銷：“We can’t accept that Reviewer #1 tried to impose his methodology on us in both rounds of his comments.”同時(shí)引用了《孟子》中“五十步笑百步”的典故予以說明審稿人所推崇的技術(shù)方法與我們目前采用的方法在應(yīng)對(duì)復(fù)雜系統(tǒng)問題時(shí)所面臨的共同困境：“It reminds us of a fable of 《Mencius》(a book of two thousand years ago): “There are two deserters. The one who escape fifty paces laughs at the other who escape a hundred paces.” Didn’t they run away all the same?” 2022年2月18日提交申訴，過了兩天時(shí)間（2月20日）我們就收到了編輯的反饋，編輯完全認(rèn)可我們的申訴：“I accept the rigor of your studies and I acknowledge your concerns with reviewer #1’s potential bias towards alternative methods.”文章也得以順利發(fā)表。 感想 這兩次特殊而有趣的交流經(jīng)歷，令人感慨萬千。遙想十年前，作為科研白丁的我也逢迎過審稿人的意見，在審稿人曲解文章本意時(shí)，為了文章的順利發(fā)表不敢過分堅(jiān)持己見。直到今天，我們不但敢于堅(jiān)持自己的見解，并且非常自信的借用古老的東方文明來陳述自己的科學(xué)見解。這背后，是我們堅(jiān)持自己的學(xué)術(shù)方向十?dāng)?shù)年，逐漸形成了一定的學(xué)術(shù)積累，同時(shí)也積攢了學(xué)術(shù)自信。 自古就有“大道雖夷，而人好徑”，曲意逢迎只是權(quán)宜之計(jì)，堅(jiān)守獨(dú)立的科學(xué)思想才是做學(xué)問的滄桑正道。且大雅君子惡速成，讓科研工作的節(jié)奏慢一點(diǎn)，產(chǎn)出少一點(diǎn)，騰出更多的精力和時(shí)間多讀書、多觀察、多思考、多感悟，不斷積累認(rèn)知深度，才是厚積薄發(fā)的做學(xué)問之道。 致謝：感謝亦師亦友的北京師范大學(xué)化學(xué)學(xué)院丁萬見老師、同門師姐國科溫州研究院楊玲老師共同走過的科研路程；感謝好友西北師范大學(xué)文學(xué)院康孝云老師給予本文的語言和修辭上的指導(dǎo)。 |
