The Mine Energy Lab at the University of Toronto (U of T) aims to accelerate the mining industry’s transition to a sustainable, net-zero future. We focus on innovating, developing, and integrating advanced clean technology solutions tailored to the unique environments of Canadian mines. Key areas of research include (i) renewable mine heating and cooling, (ii) electrification of mine operations, and (iii) thermal/electrochemical energy storage systems in mines. We are seeking graduate students at the PhD or master’s level to work on one of these three research areas in the Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering (CivMin) at U of T. The anticipated start date is September 2025 or shortly thereafter. Essential qualifications • A bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in mining/mineral engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field. • A minimum CGPA of 3.5 (or equivalent) in the bachelor’s and/or master’s degree program. • Experience and a strong interest in one or more of the following fields: heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, HVAC systems, renewable energy, energy systems, or mine electrification. • Experience in mathematical modeling using analytical and/or numerical methods. • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB). • Familiarity with finite-volume or finite-element methods through coding or software (or a willingness to learn). Funding package The minimum funding package is $40,000 per year for PhD students and $30,000 per year for MASc students, including guaranteed research fellowships and teaching assistantships. Prof. Xu (PI) is an emerging researcher leading the Mine Energy Lab at U of T. Over the past decade, he has conducted research in thermal sciences, renewable energy, and mining engineering at McGill University, CanmetENERGY, and the University of British Columbia. His contributions have been recognized with many awards, including the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship and Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.
